This ambitious infrastructure project threatens the region's vital cenotes and underground rivers, which are crucial for the ecosystem and local communities.

Additionally, the rapid growth in the area has led to inadequate sewage systems and a mounting garbage problem, exacerbating the environmental impact. The destruction of mangroves and biospheres, essential for coastal protection and wildlife, further endangers the delicate balance of this unique environment, raising concerns about irreversible damage to both natural habitats and the cultural landscape of the Mayan heritage.
